The NCAA is the National Collegiate Athletic Association.  The NCAA generates nearly a billion dollars a year in revenue each year.  The organization was formed in 1910 when President Theodore Roosevelt saw a need to "encourage reform" college athletics.  From 1910 to 1955 there were no divisions in the NCAA.  In 1956 the NCAA divided the various colleges and universities into two divisions, the University Division (large schools) and the College Division (small schools).  The NCAA was divided into three divisions in 1973 which brought about the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III.  In 1978 NCAA Division I-AA was added making a fourth football division.  Then in 2006 Divisions I and IAA were renamed for football only.  Division I became the FBS and Division IAA became the FCS.  FBS stands for Football Bowl Subdivision and FCS stands for Football Championship Subdivision.  Currently there are 127 Division I FBS schools, 122 Division I FCS schools, 156 Division II schools and 239 Division III schools that have football programs.
